The goals of the homeowner were simple...create a connection to the site and views, and create a place to relax, vacate and entertain. The juxtaposition of the modern “box” addition to the simple gabled roof structure solved a request to have more volume and a more expressive indoor/outdoor feel for the home. All rooms of the main house were oriented to enjoy ocean views while the guest house enjoys views of the ocean and the mountains behind it.

Santa Barbara's AB Design Studio was tasked with remodelling and enlarging a 1954 house that was in disrepair, including a subpar foundation made of stone rubble. "The house reflects the artistic and Zen qualities of the area's past – a place once inhabited by a collective of bohemian poets, writers and artists – by maintaining original elements and reusing stones found on-site," the team said. Honouring the area's creative and spiritual heritage was a guiding factor for the design team, along with retaining the large boulders that dot the property. By ingeniously blending a neutral palette, warm accents, luxurious finishes, modern tiles, statement lighting, and inviting furnishings, an interiors masterpiece emerges as our designer skillfully intertwined elements to forge a quintessential California Coastal aesthetic. The team also expanded an existing deck, which now wraps around the entire house. The project also involved major changes to the landscape, including the removal of a rear driveway, which allowed for the addition of a fire pit and lawn.
Oversized windows and glass doors dissolved into surrounding vistas, intertwining nature with design. Reflective surfaces mirrored the lush surroundings, while rich woods evoked driftwood treasures. Modern tiles, reminiscent of sun-kissed sands, manifested a tactile connection to the beach. Chandeliers suspended like constellations and pendant lights emulating glistening seashells added enchantment to every corner.

The Architect team worked with the Client to create stepped pathways, outdoor dining enclaves and play areas within a central garden courtyard that connects the home to a new pool and guest house. The guest home addition includes expansive decks that connect to the pool area and increase the livability of the home and property. Instead of adding more living space to the main house, the guest house serves as additional living space and bedrooms for their use.

It is sometimes preferable to reserve student internships for Student Interns who are currently completing the final two years of their degree or graduate degree programs in order to ensure that the prerequisite skill sets and context needed to gain the full value and experience offered from a 2-3 month internship. Longer term Student internships may also be considered and may provide the insight needed preceding a students decision to enter into a Design ar Architectural degree program. Whatever the case may be, it is AB design studio’s distinct pleasure and responsibility to nurture the next generation of Designers and Architects and as such Student internships are encouraged and a part of the AB design studio culture and experience.
AB design studio is a diverse group of architects, designers and builders who believe in the opportunity to make a difference through design. A classic modernist cabin from the 1950’s was transformed into a soulful retreat for an Interior Designer and her family. The original home, designed by famed Santa Barbara architect Lutah Maria Riggs, was a 2-bedroom, 1 bath home that was expanded and remodeled from foundation to roof. The result is a 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath main residence and 2-bedroom, 1 bath guest house each equipped with relaxing and inviting living spaces for the Owners and their guests to enjoy.
